Wellness tourism in Indonesia is booming, attracting both local and international travelers. As more people prioritize health and well-being, the demand for wellness experiences has surged, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

This shift in travel preferences has sparked growing interest in destinations that provide holistic health services, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Among them, Bali stands out with its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and diverse wellness offerings. As the leader in Indonesia’s wellness tourism, Bali sets the benchmark for other regions to follow.

Bali’s Role in Wellness Tourism in Indonesia

Bali plays a key role in shaping Indonesia’s wellness tourism landscape, highlighted by the inaugural Bali Wellness and Beauty Expo. Held from June 27th to 29th, 2025, this event supports government efforts to position wellness tourism as a major sector for the island.

During the expo’s launch at the Bali Beach Convention Center, Co-Founder Feri Agustian Soleh emphasized, “If wellness and beauty initiatives are implemented sustainably, Bali will become a significant platform for the industry.”

The establishment of the Special Economic Zone (KEK) Sanur further strengthens Bali’s position as a gateway for wellness tourism. With solid infrastructure in place, Bali continues to attract health-conscious travelers seeking high-quality wellness experiences.

Post-Pandemic Tourism Trends

Following the pandemic, spa and wellness services have become a major focus for entrepreneurs and investors, driving economic recovery.

Megawati, the President Director of Amerta Jiwa Indonesia, noted, “At the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2023, we saw spas emerge as a new business benchmark, receiving strong appreciation from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.”

After two years of stagnation, she sees vast opportunities in the wellness sector, as urban communities increasingly view spa and wellness services as essential parts of their lifestyles.

Cultural Wellness Experiences in Bali

Bali continues to shine as a top destination for cultural wellness experiences, seamlessly integrating its rich heritage with wellness tourism. In 2025, a significant trend is emerging where travelers seek not only cultural immersion but also physical and mental rejuvenation. Many resorts and wellness centers are responding with tailored packages that combine these elements.

For example, visitors can meditate amid serene rice fields, practice yoga in tranquil Balinese temples, and join cultural tours that showcase the island’s vibrant arts and traditions. This holistic approach allows travelers to refresh their minds and bodies while gaining a deeper appreciation of Bali’s cultural landscape.

Sustainable Tourism in Indonesia

The success of Indonesia’s wellness tourism is closely tied to sustainable practices. Achieving long-term sustainability requires balancing economic growth with social and environmental considerations.

Careful assessment of tourism activities ensures they provide lasting benefits across economic, social, and environmental aspects.

By prioritizing sustainability, Indonesia can strengthen its wellness tourism sector, placing it on par with other nations committed to sustainable tourism. This approach fosters economic growth while preserving the country’s cultural and natural resources.

Future of Wellness Tourism in Indonesia

The future of Indonesia’s wellness tourism looks bright. The Global Wellness Institute projects the sector will reach a market value of $1.2 trillion by 2025. According to the Ministry of Tourism, over 10 million foreign tourists visit Indonesia annually, with wellness and cultural experiences among the fastest-growing segments.

Furthermore, a TripAdvisor survey reveals that over 60% of travelers from developed nations prefer destinations that offer both cultural and health-oriented experiences. They particularly seek locations rich in cultural heritage and equipped with top-tier wellness facilities. This trend suggests a strong future for Indonesia’s wellness tourism as it continues to align with global travel preferences.

Bali Leading the Way in Wellness Tourism

Indonesia’s wellness tourism sector, especially in Bali, is set for remarkable growth, fueled by cultural richness and sustainable practices. Bali leads the way with its unique offerings, including yoga retreats, spa experiences, and holistic wellness programs that attract global travelers.

As more visitors seek holistic experiences that promote well-being, Bali’s dedication to sustainability and diverse wellness facilities cements its position as a top destination. This ensures lasting benefits for the economy, society, and environment.
