Leaving Indonesia: A Guide to Apply for Your Exit Permit

EPO (Exit Permit Only) is the process of returning immigration documents which is a legal sign of the end of a foreigner’s residence permit in Indonesia. EPO is given to foreigners if they want to return to their country, their contract with the company where they work has expired or because they are deported. If the EPO has been issued by the Immigration Office, then there is a period of time for the foreigner to leave Indonesia, which is 7 (seven) days, after the date of issue of the EPO.

The sponsor or guarantor must apply the exit permit while the stay permit (KITAS/KITAP) still has validity period, because if the stay permit expires, but there is no report to the immigration authorities while the foreigner is no longer in Indonesia, the foreigner will be recorded as overstaying. If the foreign citizen returns to Indonesia for the same or different business, the foreign citizen will use a new visa or residence permit.

3 Types of Exit Permit

– Exit Permit Only (EPO): is for foreigners who want to leave Indonesia and do not plan to return. They must report to end their residence permit to the Immigration Office that issued it by returning their stay permit. The reporting process is carried out by the guarantor or sponsor before the validity period of their residence permit expires. Don’t apply for the EPO too far in advance of your departure to avoid accidentally overstaying your visa.

– Exit Re-Entry Permit (ERP): Similar to EPO, it is granted to foreigners who want to leave Indonesia and not return. However, this one is for those who have already left Indonesia. The ERP is also processed by the sponsor or guarantor of the foreigner at the immigration office where their stay permit is issued.

– Multiple Exit Re-Permit (MERP) is a permit issued by local immigration for KITAS holders for permission to travel out of and re-enter Indonesia. This permit is in the form of an immigration stamp in your passport and the service can only be processed if you are in Indonesia. This permit can be given when the KITAS/KITAP is still valid for a minimum of 6 months.

Requirement to Apply for Indonesia’s Exit Permit

To apply for an exit permit, the sponsor or the guarantor must bring the following requirements to the immigration office:

1. Original and photocopy of KITAS;

2. Original and photocopy of sponsorship and guarantee letter (signed by the board of directors or managers)

3. Original and photocopy of IMTA and DPKK;

4. Photocopy of RPTKA;

5. Power of attorney for those authorized;

6. Photocopy of sponsor’s E-KTP;

7. Photocopy of the authorized party’s E-KTP

8. Return Tickets

For individual sponsors (husband/wife/parents), the application letter must be completed with a materai stamp of IDR 10,000 and attached the original and photocopy of the Indonesia’s Family Card and Marriage Certificate. It’s advisable to consult with your sponsor or a visa consultant to ensure you have all the correct documentation and understand any specific procedures required by your local immigration office.
