Thinking about retiring somewhere with a chill vibe? Bali might be more than just a vacation spot. The Indonesian island actually ranked fourth on the 2023 Global Retirement Index (GRI), meaning it’s a pretty good place to settle down to retire.

Bali offers a tropical paradise, a warm climate, and a relatively low cost of living. Whether you dream of a beachfront villa or a quiet jungle retreat, Bali has something for every retiree. Let’s break down the real deal about retiring in Bali.

What You Need to Retire in Bali

To retire in Bali, there are a few requirements to meet:

  1. Age and Intent: While there’s no strict age limit, you should be of retirement age and genuinely intend to live there.
  2. Visa: You’ll need a social or retirement visa, called a “Retirement KITAS,” valid for one year and extendable.
  3. Financial Stability: Show you have enough money to support yourself during retirement. The exact amount can change, so check with Indonesian authorities.
  4. Health Insurance: You must have health insurance, either international or local, to cover medical costs.

How to Retire in Bali

Retiring in Bali involves several steps:

  1. Get a Visa: Apply for a social or retirement visa at an Indonesian embassy or consulate in your home country. This visa allows you to live in Bali for one year.
  2. Find a Place to Live: Choose the type of accommodation that suits your lifestyle and budget. Bali has a range of options, from apartments to villas.
  3. Bank Account: Open a local bank account for managing your finances, which is often a requirement for your visa.
  4. Healthcare: Invest in health insurance for medical coverage. Bali has good healthcare facilities, but insurance is important.
  5. Local Communities: Bali has active expat communities in places like Ubud, Sanur, Seminyak, and Canggu. Join clubs and social activities to make new friends.

The Cost of Retiring in Bali

One of the biggest draws for retiring in Bali is its affordability. Here’s a breakdown of some average costs to consider, but remember these can vary depending on your preferences:

1. Accommodation: The price significantly depends on the location. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in a city center can range from $300 to $700 per month, while beachfront villas in tourist hotspots like Seminyak can reach $2,500. Quieter towns like Ubud might offer more affordable options.

2. Utilities: Monthly bills for essentials like electricity, water, and internet typically range from $50 to $150.

3. Dining: Eating out at local warungs (small, family-run restaurants with home cooking menu) is very affordable, with meals costing $3 to $8. However, frequenting Western restaurants will increase your food budget.

4. Transportation: Scooters are a popular choice for getting around, with rentals costing $50 to $70 per month. Gasoline is also reasonably priced.

5. Healthcare: Indonesian health insurance costs vary based on the coverage, but are generally lower than in Western countries.

6. Additional considerations: Remember to factor in potential costs like furniture rental/purchase, visa renewal fees, and home staff if you choose to hire them.
