Guide to Driving License Renewal in Indonesia

•••••

Renewing your driving license in Indonesia is now more convenient than ever, thanks to digital services introduced by the National Police. Whether you’re a local or a foreign resident, understanding the process of driving license renewal in Indonesia is essential to stay compliant and avoid legal issues. This guide explains everything you need to know, from who needs to renew to the required documents, fees, and how to complete the process online or offline.

Who Needs to Renew Their Driving License?

Every driver in Indonesia must renew their driver’s license, also known as SIM (Surat Izin Mengemudi), every five years. This rule applies to both Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals holding a valid Indonesian driving license. Driving with an expired SIM is a serious offense under Indonesian law and may result in fines of up to IDR 1 million or imprisonment for up to four months.

What Types of SIM Can Be Renewed?

Indonesia offers several types of SIMs depending on the vehicle:

  • SIM A – For private passenger cars
  • SIM C – For motorcycles
  • SIM B1 – For private commercial vehicles such as small trucks
  • SIM B2 – For heavy vehicles such as buses or large trucks

All of these SIM types are eligible for renewal through either online or offline channels.

Requirements and Documents for SIM Renewal for Foreigners

Foreigners living in Indonesia must provide the following documents to renew their driving license:

  • Valid passport
  • KITAS or KITAP (residency permit)
  • Expired or current SIM
  • Health check certificate (e-Rikkes)
  • Psychological test result (e-PPSI)
  • Digital photo with a blue background
  • Digital signature on plain white paper

These documents must be scanned or photographed clearly for online submission. The validity of the stay permit is a crucial factor, so ensure it is up to date before applying.

When to Renew and Penalties for Late Renewal

Your SIM is valid for five years from the date of issuance. It must be renewed on or before the expiration date. If you miss this deadline, you cannot simply renew; it will be treated as a new application, requiring you to retake both written and practical driving tests. Therefore, it’s advisable to start the renewal process at least 14 days before your license expires.
