For many foreigners living in Indonesia, the process of renewing or changing their residency status has traditionally involved a significant disruption. Leaving the country, waiting for applications to be processed at the immigration office, and then re-entering the country could be a time-consuming and expensive hassle.
However, recent changes in Indonesian immigration law offer a welcome solution, the Transitional Stay Permit, also known as a Bridging Visa. Let’s find out more about it.
What is a Bridging Visa?
The Directorate General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights first introduced the Bridging Visa policy in April 2024. This permit acts as a bridge between a foreigner’s existing residence permit and their application for a new one.
Previously, holders of Limited Stay Permits (KITAS) and Permanent Stay Permits (KITAP) who needed to change their status would have had to leave Indonesia while their application was processed. The Bridging Visa eliminates this requirement, allowing foreigners to remain in Indonesia legally while their new permit application is being processed.
Benefits of the Bridging Visa:
The Bridging Visa offers significant advantages for foreigners in Indonesia:
– Convenience and Flexibility: By allowing foreigners to stay in Indonesia while their application is processed, the Bridging Visa eliminates the need for potentially disruptive trips abroad. This saves time, money, and allows for a smoother transition between residency statuses.
– Reduced Risk of Overstaying: Foreigners whose Bridging Visa application is approved after their previous permit expires will not be penalized for overstaying. This provides peace of mind and avoids potential complications.
How does the Bridging Visa in Indonesia work?
The Bridging Visa is available to foreigners who meet the requirements outlined in Article 94A paragraph (2) of Regulation of Ministry of Law & Human Rights No 11/2024. This includes:
* Holders of Visit Stay Permits originating from a Visit Visa on Arrival (VOA).
* Holders of Limited Stay Permits (KITAS).
* Holders of Permanent Stay Permits (KITAP).
The Bridging Visa is valid for 60 days and is only valid onshore, meaning it is only applicable to foreigners already in Indonesia and becomes invalid if the holder leaves the country.
How to Apply for a Bridging Visa
The application process for a Bridging Visa is straightforward and must be submitted no later than 3 days before the expiration of the applicant’s existing residence permit.
Required Documents:
1. Valid passport.
2. Existing Visit Stay Permit (VOA), Limited Stay Permit (KITAS), or Permanent Stay Permit (KITAP).
3. Proof of guarantee (if applicable).
4. Statement letter explaining the purpose of applying for the Bridging Visa and the desired new residency status.
The Bridging Visa application process involves several steps. After submitting the application form, you will pay the required fee and need to await approval from the Immigration office.
