Amid news of Indonesia’s economy slowing down slightly at the start of 2025, its tourism sector continues to show various improvements, sparking optimism. How does this achievement impact tourism trends?

Foreign Exchange Earnings

The tourism industry is considered a major driver of Indonesia’s economic growth. A surge in tourist numbers—both domestic and international—in 2024 generated foreign exchange earnings of USD 16.7 billion, marking a 19.3% growth compared to 2023. This makes Indonesia’s tourism sector the third-largest contributor to foreign exchange earnings, after oil and gas and migrant workers.

In order to maximize Indonesia’s tourism potential, mapping the foreign tourist market is key. Surveys conducted by experts in 2023 and 2024 reveal that Indonesia’s tourism sector is maintaining a positive trend, with a particular focus on cultural immersion, health and wellness tourism, and eco-tourism. These are the trends the government plans to promote further in order to boost the tourism industry.

“The strategies and policies for tourism that will be implemented in the coming years will refer to global tourism trends studied by various industry experts, academics, and the government,” said Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy.

Stargazing and Coolcation

The compass of global tourism is pointing towards more meaningful and conscious experiences, and the trends for 2025 underscore this shift. Research by experts highlights the increasingly diverse and evolving preferences of tourists :

•  Cultural Immersion: About 58.97% of experts indicate that travelers are now more inclined toward experiencing deeper cultural immersion. This reflects their desire for more authentic travel experiences that directly connect them with local culture.

•  Health and Wellness Tourism: 56.41% of experts predict that health and wellness tourism will be a major trend, driven by the growing interest in physical and mental well-being, especially post-pandemic. Travelers are now more focused on incorporating wellness into their journeys.

•  Eco-Tourism: Eco-tourism remains a relevant trend, with 46.15% of experts agreeing that sustainability-focused tourism will continue to thrive. Growing environmental awareness is encouraging tourists to choose destinations that prioritize natural preservation.

•  Outdoor and Adventure Activities: Outdoor and adventure activities are also expected to rise in popularity. Trends like star bathing (stargazing under beautiful night skies), gig-tripping (traveling to attend favorite artists’ concerts), and coolcations (vacations in cooler regions like mountains and lakes) are predicted to captivate travelers.

Limitless Experiences

As we look towards the travel landscape of 2025, Bali, Indonesia’s premier tourist destination, effortlessly embodies all the major tourism trends. Visitors will discover a wealth of experiences across the island, and Alassari Sanctuary stands out as an ideal place to immerse oneself in these trends.
