Indonesian Business Registration Process: Scam Alert Tips

Starting a business in Indonesia has become easier with the introduction of the Online Single Submission (OSS) system. However, this convenience has also opened doors for fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting entrepreneurs. A recent case in Sinjai highlights the risks.

A business owner almost fell victim to a scam when someone impersonating a Ministry of Investment officer offered to update their Business Identification Number (NIB) in exchange for a bank transfer. Fortunately, the business owner sensed something was off and reported the incident before any money changed hands.

“We’re grateful that when the scammer asked for a certain amount of money to be sent via bank transfer, the business owner sensed something was off and suspected fraud. That’s when the matter was reported directly to me,” said Lukman Dahlan, Head of the Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Office (PMPTSP) in Sinjai, as reported by rri.co.id.

The Role of the OSS Platform in the Indonesian Business Registration Process

The OSS platform plays a central role in the Indonesian business registration process. It streamlines licensing by integrating multiple requirements into a single, digital system. Business owners can apply for a Business Identification Number (NIB), which serves as their official company identity, through OSS.

The system replaces previous documents such as the Company Registration Certificate (TDP), Importer Identification Number (API), and Customs Access permits. By using OSS, entrepreneurs gain quicker access to legality while avoiding the inefficiencies of Indonesia’s older licensing framework.

Recent Scam Cases Targeting New Business Owners

In the Sinjai case, the scammer contacted the business owner directly by phone, claiming to be from OSS. They offered assistance with data updates and NIB reactivation. The scam escalated when the impersonator asked the entrepreneur to transfer funds to a specific account.

“This has actually happened before, and now it’s happening again,” said Lukman. He added, “There is never a situation where OSS staff will call business owners to offer direct assistance. If anyone receives such a call, please report it immediately to our office at the Public Service Mall.”

These tactics prey on business owners who may not fully understand the official process. The scammers often use urgency and authority to trick victims into making hasty decisions.

How to Safely Navigate the Indonesian Business Registration Process

The correct way to complete the Indonesian business registration process begins with establishing a legal entity such as a PT, CV, or cooperative. Business owners must then obtain a Tax Identification Number (NPWP) and register through the official OSS website at oss.go.id.

The platform requires users to input details such as business data, shareholder information, investment value, foreign worker plans (if any), and BPJS registration. Once completed, the system issues the NIB and other relevant licenses digitally. The entire process is free and does not involve direct phone communication.

Tips to Avoid Licensing Scams in Indonesia

To protect your business from scams, consider these steps:

  • Never transfer money to individuals claiming to represent OSS.
  • Do not respond to calls offering unsolicited help with your NIB.
  • Always register and update information only through oss.go.id.
  • Contact your local PMPTSP office if you are unsure about any communication.
  • Use trusted legal consultants or notaries when needed, and verify their credentials.

Following these steps will help you avoid unnecessary risks and focus on growing your business.

Protect Your Business From the Start

A smooth Indonesia business registration process starts with using official channels like OSS and staying informed. Scams can derail your plans, but awareness and caution can protect your investments. By following proper procedures and verifying information, you ensure your business starts on a secure foundation.
